Mediation can be
the best path towards a
HAPPY ENDING

Lafortune Avocats benefits from the expertise of two accredited mediators who can help you resolve your family disputes. Me Lafortune and Me Bélisle work together to welcome you into a positive, supervised, and professional mediation climate. As mediators, they act as impartial and neutral parties who do not represent either spouse, but who instead help separating couples negotiate a win-win agreement.

WHAT DOES THE FAMILY
MEDIATION PROCESS
ENTAIL?

The first step in mediation is to place yourself in a state of acceptance and openness, with a desire to reach for the common good. To come to an agreement, former spouses must communicate in a positive and respectful manner. During mediation meetings, discussions are held in a climate of cooperation and empathy where each party respects the other and works to find solutions that will be in their mutual interest, with a particular emphasis on the fundamental well-being of their children.

MEDIATION IS

  • A way to express your needs in the presence of a neutral party.
  • An opportunity for discussion in an atmosphere of equality and rationality.
  • A vital way to settle a separation by considering the needs of the children without having to argue in court.

MEDIATION IS NOT

  • An alternative to couples therapy.
  • An appropriate avenue for cases of domestic violence or mental health issues.
  • An option if you are not willing to compromise.

DID YOU KNOW?

There is a government subsidized mediation program. If you are part of a separating or divorcing couple with minor or major children in your care, you will be entitled to 5 hours of government subsidized mediation. Thereafter, for any change in your situation, you will be entitled to review sessions equivalent to 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Couples without children are entitled to 3 hours of free, government-subsidized mediation.
